It’s hard to believe that something as simple as walking can help you slow down the aging process, lose weight, boost your cardiovascular and skeletal health and improve your mood. But it can. A simple 30-minute walk every day will produce measurable benefits. Whether you walk through a mall, hike through the woods or stroll through your neighborhood you will improve your physical and mental health. In today’s society, we simply don’t walk enough. Studies show that 40 percent of American adults spend most of their day sitting. In the long term, an inactive lifestyle can lead to obesity and

Women in their fifties may be concerned about the risk of strokes yet many do not feel that a “gym” lifestyle is for them. The good news is that in a long-term study by the Harvard School of Public Health, it was found that walking came out on top for slashing the risk of strokes in women by up to 68%. Here’s the lowdown: The research study followed more than 39,000 female health professionals with an average age of 54. Every 2-3 years the study group reported on their physical activity which ranged from jogging and aerobics classes to yoga.

Being cooped up in an office all week when the weather is sunny and warm can trigger a major case of spring fever. So when the weekend finally arrives, we rush outdoors to play a game of softball, go for a three-mile bike ride, paint the garage or plant a garden. While physical exercise is absolutely critical to good health, the “weekend warrior” who is sedentary all week often winds up with sore, aching muscles and limited mobility. While muscle soreness and cramps aren’t generally life threatening, they can be uncomfortable and annoying and can dampen your enthusiasm for physical

It seems like whenever I turn on the TV, I see something with yoga in it. From sit-coms to car advertisements, even a beer commercial, everywhere you turn, people are talking about yoga. For the first time since the 70′s, yoga is experiencing a resurgence of interest. Is West meeting East, or are the baby boomers trying yet another trend to slow the pace of their hectic lives? Anyone who knows yoga will tell you it’s no trend. The practice of yoga has a deeply rooted scientific basis, and it’s been around for over three thousand years. Yoga has stayed

Regardless of where you live in the glorious U.S.A., summertime is here, and it’s time to get outside and walk off those extra pounds and maybe even some winter blues. Walking is by far the safest, most simple and inexpensive form of physical activity you can do. Walking has the least potential for bodily injury, as compared to activities such as jogging and running because it is less jarring to the joints, particularly the knees. For vibrant health and happiness, try to walk several times a week for at least 30 minutes—but daily is even better. Some people prefer a
