Many people pass the time musing over what they would do if they won the lottery, or how long they hope to live. With regard to aging, most people want to live to be a ripe old age, providing their health and quality of life remains good. One of the problems first-world countries are facing is the fact that people are living much longer and the state can no longer support an aging population who expect to draw a generous pension.

97 years old - Almost there

A recent genetic test is said to have uncovered the secrets of whether a person is likely to celebrate their 100th birthday. Researchers at Boston University claim that their scientific tests can identity longevity in an individual with a 77% success rate. This major study analyzed the genetic makeup of centenarians and highlighted a number of variants in their DNA which indicated a likelihood of living a long life. Many of these genetic markers are known to be factors which stave off lethal diseases, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and dementia.

This also ties in with accepted findings that living to be 100 often runs in families. Although some argue that healthy lifestyles are likely to run in families, this new study also shows a strong genetic predisposition to longevity. Our lifespan is consequently determined by lifestyle, genes and environment. This can be affected to some degree by diet, smoking, exercise and pollution.

The study scanned the genomes of 1,055 centenarians and compared them with a similar number of normal healthy individuals. There were 150 DNA variants which were common to the older age group which seemed to be the key to healthier, more resilient bodies. Further tests divided the centenarians by genetic makeup into 19 groups and just one of these groups was shown to contain almost half the test group who were aged 110 and older.

Another interesting discovery in the research showed that the centenarians had the same number of high-risk genes as the rest of the population, but had more protective genes which canceled them out. Currently genetic testing focuses on genes which raise a patient’s risk to disease, rather than those which reduce it.

The publication of this study will help other researchers understand why and how the body ages and may lead to drugs which will slow down the aging process. The more difficult problem may be deciding how long we will have to work before retiring, if we are all expecting to live to be 100!
