As summer draws to a close many of us are checking our calendars to see if we can squeeze in one more vacation travel adventure before the busy fall season sets in. Vacations are an important part of maintaining a healthy life balance because they allow us a chance to rest and recharge our batteries. The last thing you want when you are enjoying a trip to the beach or the mountains is a bout with gastric distress. Make sure you take proper care of yourself to keep your dream vacation from becoming a gastrointestinal nightmare.

 Our bodies follow natural rhythms and the changes associated with travel can create challenges for our digestive systems. Travel often interrupts the body clock that regulates hunger and bowel movements, especially when you cross time zones. It’s also easy to fall into poor eating habits while traveling. People who otherwise eat healthy diets might be tempted to consume too much caffeine and alcohol, snack between meals and gulp down food in a hurry when rushing to catch a plane or train. The result can be abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhea.

One easy way to help prevent gastric upset is to start taking probiotic supplements at least two weeks prior to your trip.
