Nurture Your Skin From The Inside Out
by Holly Anderson on June 9th, 2010There is one thing that all women have in common and that is the quest for beautiful skin. Consequently American women spend millions of dollars each year in the hope of finding the perfect potion that will make their skin appear young and radiant. In order to achieve beautiful skin, it is important to focus not only on the creams and lotions that you put on your skin but also on what you put into your body.

Most experts agree that your skin is a mirror of what is going on inside your body and that all skin conditions are indicators of your body’s internal needs. That being the case, there are many nutritional choices you can make that can significantly improve the health of your skin.
For starters, drink plenty of water. Good hydration is critical to healthy skin. Water flushes out toxins from everywhere in your body and helps keep your skin moisturized from the inside out. Aim for six to eight glasses a day. Limit your alcohol intake because it causes dehydration which can lead to dry skin that ages before its time.
Sip one or two cups of green tea every day. This beverage contains polyphenols, which have anti-inflammatory properties that protect and benefit the skin. Green tea is also loaded with other antioxidants that improve your general health by neutralizing free radicals in your body.
Avoid simple carbohydrates. Foods such as cookies, pies, cakes, candies and pastries can either cause or aggravate skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and inflammation.

Essential fatty acids are crucial to the production of skin’s natural oil barrier. Without an adequate supply of EFAs, the skin produces a more irritating form of sebum, or oil, which can result in problems such as inflammation, dryness and frequent breakouts. Unrefined, cold-pressed flax seed oil contains the essential omega-3 fatty acids that are necessary for healthy skin. Try adding a bit of flax seed oil to salads or baked potatoes.
In addition to a healthy diet, there are many nutritional supplements available that can help keep your skin cells strong and boost moisture content. Look for supplements that contain vitamin E, vitamin B, Vitamin A , Vitamin C, primrose oil and/tea tree oil. Choose the ones that best suit your skin’s unique needs. Beautiful skin, just like radiant health, begins from the inside out.
